The Sakai Family
Sakai is a kind of common japanese family name, but the Sakais in UO are well known event related character in Japanese shards.
Each one of them have own job
The oldest one is Barber Sakai; he hands off a hair restyling coupon back in 1999. And the most famous one is Tailor Sakai; if you found her hiding-tailoring somewhere in Malas, she gave you a Hooded Shroud of Umbra per character.
On Mugen(japanese Siege Perilous), she was not Tailor, but, er, Murderer.
Cobbler Sakai is well known as well; He gave out Waraji and Tabi of a Tokuno Isle for travellers who found him.
New: Tamer Sakai; He is a failure person of elite Sakais, so his pet slimes swallowed special dyes invented by honorable Sakai family then ran off. We could dye cloth in AOS color by soaking it in slime.[2008]

Finnigan Event
Finnigan is another well known person on japanese shards. He was Mayor of Britain in 2004/2005 now aiming at getting back.
This is one of the most famous event lead by him.
In later September 2004, orc invasion related event "Britain Protection Plan was put in effect!" started. I think you remember you gather ore and logs for building anti-orc gates. On japanese shards, it's a competing event against each shard and seems got a good success.
The core idea Shard Competition was put into next event, "2nd Britain Protection Plan" Oct/Nov 2008: it consist of "Expectations by Mayor'S'"(food gathering preparing for invasion), "Retrieve the Foods!"(battle against orc scouts stealing foods), and "Mayor'S' on these days"(total the foods).
In the end of the event, players on each shard got Embroidered Shirt.
Only on the winning shard Izumo, we could get Shirt as well and another reward out of three from their choice; Big Muffin, Finnigans Hat, and Statue of Finnigan.
Mugen didn't win but low population and disability of shard transfer was taken in consideration, so people on Mugen got additional Izumo reward.
This event was memorable for japanese shard players, because of the reward items(1), scale(2), and span(3).
1. Items: EAJapan basically does not produce event item for years. See Backgrounds.
Except all Asia gift Umbra Robes, these are substantially the first japanese shard item after about 5 years of no-event-item-policy period.
2. Scale: Took place on all japanese shards. We watch each other, sometimes disturb accross shards.
Gives Reward away on all japanese shards, open for everyone. All of us, even non participants or non japanese shard people, rewarded on every japanese shards.
3. Duration was about 2 month. Top shards were indeed in dead heat though, it was too long indeed.
Resource gatherer and crafter have almost died before orc invasion.
The event duration made it very memorable for participants.
Extra: The night before Food Storage event on Asuka shard.
On Asuka, the Mayor Finnigan has developed new muffin in his office. Muffin is his favorite food.
Players visit there and eat them up every night. Yes, it's the beggining of Muffin War.
Thousands of muffins have been eaten. Almost finished.
And...Eaten up!
Many people tease Finnigan.
